Click for details. Hear pronunciation Press to hear pronunciation. Conic Hill is a sharp little summit rising above Balmaha. Right on the Highland Boundary Fault, this short hillwalk offers truly fantastic views over Loch Lomond and its many islands.
Good path on the ascent, with steps. The detour from the West Highland Way up to the summit involves a short rocky scramble. Balmaha car park. Open start point in Google Maps for directions. As well as reading our description of each walking route, you can read about the experiences of others users on this walk and others. There are 51 user reports for this walk - click to read them. Currently 4. The path leaves from the very back of the car park close to an information board.
It immediately divides at a t-junction; turn right here along the track, and at the next junction turn left onto a path; this section of the walk is marked by the Thistle symbols of the West Highland Way. The well-made path now climbs up through the trees before leaving the forest via a small gate, with Conic Hill in view ahead.
The path climbs steeply with flights of wooden steps, aiming for the gap between Conic Hill and its nearer neighbour. Stay on the main path as it curves round between the two hills. Once you reach the col, a short boggy detour to the left reveals the first classic view of the many islands in Loch Lomond. Conic Hill is on the exact line of the Highland Boundary Fault; the string of islands across Loch Lomond and the ridge of Conic Hill are all on the fault line.
Return to the main West Highland Way path; it now swings to climb across the northern flank of Conic Hill. Ignore an eroded path off up the ridge after m or so - it's better to stay on the West Highland Way path along the flank of the hill until a much clearer path forks right and heads steeply up to the ridge. By this point the views of Loch Lomond and the hills on the far side are superb. From the ridge, the highest point is to the left, reached by a path that keeps on the left side een baggers looking to reach the true highest point will need to detour further along the ridge to a less dramatic summit.
Back where you met the ridge, it's worth also heading along the boggy ridgeline to the right to a slightly lower summit with the best views.
The mountains clustered around the upper end of Loch Lomond include the Arrochar Alps and Ben Lomond in a quite sensational view. The simplest return route is retrace your steps - no hardship with such superb views ahead.
A longer alternative - making a circuit - instead follows the West Highland Way to the right, passing round the northern side of the hill before descending to a footbridge over the Burn of Mar. This route continues along the Way, crossing a second footbridge before passing through an area which has been felled and replanted, and eventually reaching a signed junction of forestry tracks.
A right turn here leads down a track which becomes Crietyhall Road and descends to Milton of Buchanan, a road walk of just over 2km east of Drymen. If intending to follow this circuit, it is perhaps better to reverse the whole route in order to have the Conic Hill views revealed suddenly and enjoyed on the descent. Before leaving Balmaha, be sure to visit the statue of Tom Weir - the famous outdoorsmen, writer and broadcaster who helped popularise Scotland's great outdoors for so many people.

It is on the east bank of Loch Lomondbeside the village of Balmaha. It is a sharp little summit which is on the Highland Boundary Fault. From the top, it offers impressive views over Loch Lomond and towards Glasgow ; on a clear day it is even possible to see Goat Fell on Arranabout 50 miles 80 kilometres southwest.
In addition, the rounded outline of Ailsa Craig in the Clyde Estuary is sometimes visible. It is accessible for walking, and forms part of the West Highland Way. During the lambing season, dogs are not allowed in the two enclosed fields on the east approach to Conic Hill, even if they are on a lead.
The season normally lasts for around three weeks at the end of April and early May. However, this does not affect access with a dog to Conic Hill from the Balmaha direction. The hill is accessible by public transport, with buses and ferries arriving in Balmaha. There is also a car park at the base, allowing those with vehicles a place to park before climbing the hill.
In August8 members of Deafblind Scotland ascended the hill with help from rangers and guides. Media related to Conic Hill at Wikimedia Commons.

A bit more cloud around in for Fife in the afternoon as a few snow showers may drift in from the coast by evening. A few snow showers overnight especially for southern Tayside and later Fife, strengthening winds around the coast later too.Jumpshot landing 2k21 next gen
Some clear spells in the west. A cloudy day in the east with some snow showers possible around the coasts accompanied by strong winds. Drier and brighter for Central. A few snow showers lingering on Saturday morning but becoming mainly dry.
Cloudier on Sunday and Monday with some patchy rain or snow and gales around the coasts. The UK looks to be split broadly east and west in terms of the general weather types with the west being wet with strong winds at times, and the east being drier and finer.
Any snowfall also then most likely becomes restricted to the Scottish mountains. From the weekend of the 20th, there are signs of more widespread settled conditions becoming established - which would correspond with temperatures falling back to below average, and with increased incidence of overnight frost and fog. Into late February there is a signal for higher than average pressure to expand westwards leading to an increased chance of snow showers redeveloping in the east, for conditions in the north to become generally quite settled and for unsettled weather in the south, with disruptive snow possible.

A similar picture continues into March, though milder conditions in the west look more likely to spread northwards. Video forecasts.
