Magazines and testers were staggered. Says Motorcycle Classics :. Today, AdamJames aims to carry on the tradition of his forefathers through his workshop:. With this Yamaha XS, Licari sought to build a one-of-a-kind motorcycle that captured the spirit of a cafe racer, achieving a balance of form, function, performance, and reliability. He went through every inch of the bike, repurposing OEM components when possible and leveraging his deep knowledge of these big air-cooled fours:.
Below, we get more details on the build, and some stunning shots from AdamJames himself — an incredible moto photographer in his own right.Crucible test in a sentence
Licari Co. He was a craftsman, a carpenter, and a man who built and designed many things with his hands. I push to carry on this tradition in all the works that I do. This one is lightened, fully tuned, and considerably faster.National geographic kids
Maintenance-free shaft drive keeps things clean. Quad Mikuni BS34mm carburetors deliver the fuel needed to make all that power. This is the genesis for the Yamaha R1 — it was the first liter bike and first four cylinder produced by the tuning fork legends. Every aspect of this bike operates and functions flawlessly. It is dialed in perfectly and is a total blast to ride. The entire idea behind this build was to put together a one of a kind moto that captures the spirit of a classic cafe racer, and to stay true to the ethos of the movement.
I spent countless hours modifying existing components and fabricating new ones from scratch to achieve my vision without spending tens of thousands of dollars on off-the-shelf parts.
I reused and re-purposed a high number of OEM fasteners and brackets to accomplish this, such as the hangers for the power tray — they were factory relay mounts in the triangle that I cut off and re-used. I know them very well, and found a nice balance point between form, function, performance, and reliability. This is hands down my favorite bike I have ever ridden, and I think others will appreciate all the little touches that went into it.

So I sold the cars, bought a couple of bikes and started work changing them.
Today, after three years, we rebuild a motorcycle every 2 weeks on average. We have put together more than 50 motorcycles over that time and we have around 30 bikes underway at any one time in the workshop. It took approximately 3 months to build because of the level of fabrication that went into it. It is a personal project that I bought because someone was selling it cheap. Unlike most jobs which are done in my workshop, this motorcycle was done mainly by myself with my own hands.
However, after some more thought, I decided a metallic finish with some post-apocalyptic touches would be better. Maybe Mad Max left a lasting impression on me when I was young! The gas tank, front fairing, side covers, and cowl were made using my own designs and measurements.
With the lowered suspension the front wheel tucks up into the fairing creating an optical illusion that makes the front wheel appear huge, but it is the stock unit. The exhaust system we made is a 4-into-2 setup with megaphone-style mufflers that we built ourselves and it all fits neatly inside the belly of the fairing. I used more leather to cover the dash rather than adding a perspex screen and custom made the seat and tank strap using matching brown leather.
The instrument cluster features only a tachometer, the ignition switch and warning lights in pure style of racing. My experience with motorcycles goes back to my childhood. I got my first motorcycle when I was 7 years old. It was a gift that my Dad gave me. One day he came home and asked me what I would prefer between on a video game console or a motorcycle. The problem was however that the bike was in pieces.

The bike was clocked with a quarter-mile time of At pounds wet, the XS was more of a muscle bike than sport bike, but still succeeding in winning a host of endurance races — particularly in Australia.
Well-known moto-journalist Roland Brown has said of the XS Below, Shawn gives us the full story on the build.
The bike was mildly modified, low mileage done when bought, then stripped down to bare metal. I used the factory seat pan, shortening it by 4 inches, then turned up the tail piece to create a bum-stop. A custom aluminum pan under the seat was made to house the electrics and a Full Spectrum Power P3 lithium battery under the seat.
The forks were rebuilt, tunes machined 2 inches shorter and a 3 inch lowering kit machined to lower internally. Progressive springs were installed as well. I worked as a fabricator in a CNC shopso I designed and had made a number of parts custom. The top triple, solid motor mounts, velocity stacks and headlight mounts are custom.
